Comprehensive New Theory of Aging

The CompX Research Institute today published “Complex X and the Growth Process – A Proposed General Theory of Human Dysfunctionality.”  The Institute’s 50-page Hypothesis sets forth a conceptual framework that explains why humans lose functionality over time.  Where all prior explanations of the aging process assume that the infirmities of aging are the inevitable result of our genetic programming, the Hypothesis posits that the loss of functionality with aging is the result of our phenotypes (what we are) varying from our genotypes (what we are genetically designed to be).  The aging process results from that deviation increasing over time.

 

According to the Hypothesis, humans are genetically designed to function perfectly throughout their lifespans.  However, environmental factors cause phenotype to differ from genotype.  The unstated reason why people make health-related lifestyle changes (diet, exercise, not smoking) is to reduce that variation.  The Hypothesis identifies the key, uncorrected environmental factor and how that factor results in the progressive increase in the variation between phenotype and genotype.

 

“The most important new concept introduced by the Hypothesis is the Growth Process,” said the founder of the Institute.  “Scientists have known for ages that loss of function is the result of the accumulation of years of minor damage at the cellular level.  Why didn’t evolution provide us a mechanism for repairing that damage?  The Growth Process is that mechanism – when activated, it repairs and rejuvenates every organ and system in the human body.”  The Growth Process is a separate bodily function that involves the complex interaction of dozens of substances.  The same process that is utilized by fetuses, infants and children is available to adults of any age.  But it must be activated through a particular stimulus.  Due to an environmental factor, adult humans hardly ever activate the Growth Process.  That failure to activate the Growth Process leads to increasing deviation between genotype and phenotype over time – the aging process.

 

The Hypothesis explains not only how the Growth Process works, but also spells out the interventions that will allow anyone to activate the Growth Process.  “We don’t have a cure for aging,” said the founder.  “Evolution doesn’t much care about the cosmetic effects of aging.  But evolution cares deeply about functionality.  The Hypothesis tells us how we can maintain functionality throughout our lifespans.  And since all chronic degenerative diseases are the result of loss of functionality, the Hypothesis provides a blueprint that will result in the eradication of all of those diseases.”

Founder of CompX Research Institute Explains How Growth Process Works to Prevent Aging

On Wednesday, the CompX Research Institute published “Complex X and the Growth Process – A Proposed General Theory of Senescence,” a conceptual framework that explains exactly why humans lose functionality over time.  Today, the founder of the Institute published a blog that provides additional insight into the Growth Process.

 

“A multitude of studies have confirmed that whenever a healthy human of any age exercises at a level of intensity that raises blood levels of lactate, his or her pituitary gland secretes human growth hormone,” said the founder.  “Whenever a healthy human of any age exercises at a level of intensity that raises blood levels of lactate, his or her blood levels of brain derived neurotrophic factor increase in proportion to the levels of lactate.”  HGH is associated with the growth and health of all organs other than the brain.  BDNF can be likened to HGH for the brain – it triggers the growth of new neurons and helps repair and protect brain cells.  Elevated levels of lactate in the blood also trigger elevated levels of all other growth hormones, stems cells and other progenitor cells, steroids, AMPK and a number of other substances.   

 

“The same stimulus – elevated blood levels of lactate – activates the release of dozens of substances that are associated with growth and rejuvenation,” said the founder.  “It happens every single time and in proportion to the amount of lactate in the blood.  Remarkably, prior to the publication of the Hypothesis, no one had recognized that this cascade of hormones and other substances must constitute a single coordinated process – the Growth Process.”

 

Many of the substances involved in the Growth Process are ineffective in the absence of others, and some are harmful if not metabolized quickly.   The presence of elevated levels of these substances is incompatible with homeostasis.  Thus, the Growth Process must be a discrete process that occurs quickly.

Founder of CompX Research Institute Explains How Exercise

Affects Health and Aging

The CompX Research Institute’s proposed new theory of aging posits that the aging process is the result of the progressive divergence between phenotype (what we are) and genotype (our genetic design), with that divergence being caused by environmental factors.  Today, the founder of the Institute posted a blog that identifies intense exercise as the critical environmental factor and explains the mechanisms whereby exercise affects health and aging.

 

“Any animal that is subject to the forces of nature frequently exercises with intensity,” said the founder.  “Otherwise it is killed by predators or it starves.  Intense physical activity is as much a part of the evolutionary environment as is food, sunlight or air.  An insufficient amount of any one of them will cause phenotype to vary from genotype.  Human civilization allows us to choose not to engage in vigorous physical activity.  As a result, we fail to activate the Growth Process, which leads to the progressive divergence between phenotype and genotype that we call the aging process.”

 

The reason that science has been unable to pinpoint the mechanism whereby exercise provides health benefits is that there are a number of different mechanisms at play.  “Exercise can be likened to light,” said the founder.  “Both are critical elements of the evolutionary environment.  A campfire is better than sitting in the dark.  Electric lights are better, but no matter how bright the light, artificial light will not replicate the natural environment.  Only sunlight has the necessary wavelengths that cause the body to synthesize Vitamin D.  And in the absence of Vitamin D, the body suffers a number of health problems – phenotype will differ from genotype.”

 

There are similar qualitative differences between types of exercise.  Any movement is better than none.  Steady state exercises such as jogging, cycling or swimming have been proven to provide cardiovascular benefits.  But only intense exercise, at a level above the lactate threshold, causes the body to synthesize the lactate and other signaling metabolites (which the Hypothesis labels “Complex X”) that activate the Growth Process.

 

“The Growth Process is evolution’s mechanism for conforming genetic potential to environmental reality,” said the founder.  “Since most of the other necessary environmental factors have been accounted for, we believe that the failure to engage in the intense exercise that activates the Growth Process is the fundamental cause of the infirmities of aging.  The good news is that just as medical technology has developed alternative means of administering Vitamin D, medical technology will develop alternative means of administering Complex X.”
